Google Just Filed AI Visibility Under SEO. Reddit Is the Half of the Surface It Won't Measure.
Google published an AEO/GEO "still SEO" guide, then shipped AI visibility reporting inside Search Console — not a separate tool. The report is real, useful, and covers roughly half of the AI-visibility surface. The other half — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini standalone — runs on Reddit citations, and no mainstream SEO tool publishes there.

Two announcements, one argument
In the past six weeks, Google made two related moves that most SEO teams read as separate stories.
In May, Google published a new documentation page — Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search — that declared, in Google's own language, that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO. AEO and GEO, the guide said, are not separate disciplines. They are subsets of the discipline you already have.
Then, weeks later, Google shipped the follow-through: AI search visibility reporting was added inside Google Search Console. Not a new product. Not a "Generative Console." The same tool every SEO team already opens now shows how often a domain turns up inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's AI features.
Read together, the two moves are one argument compiled into software. Google is telling you, in words and then in code, that AI visibility lives inside the SEO discipline, inside the SEO tool, inside the SEO reporting cadence. The people who were planning to sell you a separate "GEO console" now have a harder pitch.
The argument is coherent. It is also incomplete. The dashboard Google just gave you lights up part of the room. The rest is not empty — it is where most of the AI-visibility surface currently lives.
What the Search Console report actually covers
The new report is scoped precisely, and Google has been direct about the scoping. Search Console's AI reporting shows impressions and clicks from Google's own AI surfaces — AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's generative features. Nothing else.
It does not show ChatGPT citations. It does not show Perplexity answers. It does not show Claude retrievals. It does not show Gemini's own conversational product outside Search. It does not show Microsoft Copilot. Cross-engine visibility trackers still see those surfaces; Google's free dashboard, deliberately, does not.
For Google, that scoping is honest. Google can only report on what happens inside Google. What the scope quietly implies for everyone else is the more important point: the visibility surface where Reddit runs the show — the ChatGPT-Claude-Perplexity axis — is not measured in the tool the industry is about to standardize on.
The streetlight effect on an entire channel
There is an old joke about a drunk searching for his keys under a streetlight — not because he dropped them there, but because that is where the light is. The joke is on the way to becoming an AI-visibility strategy.
The moment Google's AI visibility becomes free, native, and trackable inside a tool every operator already has open, it becomes the AI visibility people actually watch. Not because Google's AI surface matters more than ChatGPT's or Claude's or Perplexity's. Because Google's surface is the one with a free dashboard.
That is a real risk for anyone whose job is to move citations, not just report on them. The half of the AI-visibility surface Google will not measure for you is the half where Reddit is disproportionately loud. Citation analysis published across 2025 and into 2026 consistently places Reddit around 40 percent of all cited domains in major LLM responses — ahead of Wikipedia, YouTube, and Google itself. On commercial-intent queries the concentration is higher. Every response ChatGPT synthesizes, every product recommendation Perplexity offers, every "what's the best X" question Claude answers has a non-trivial chance of pulling from a Reddit thread and citing it directly.
None of that shows up in Search Console. None of it ever will.

Inside the streetlight
- Google AI OverviewsGenerative answers at the top of Google Search results.
- Google AI ModeGoogle's conversational search experience.
- Google Discover AIAI-enhanced Discover feed on mobile.
Outside the streetlight
- ChatGPTOpenAI's conversational AI, with web browsing enabled.
- ClaudeAnthropic's conversational AI, with retrieval enabled.
- PerplexityAI answer engine that returns cited sources.
- Gemini (standalone)Google Gemini used as a standalone chat product.
- Microsoft CopilotMicrosoft's cross-product AI assistant.
- Not reported in any Google surface. Reddit is consistently among the top cited domains in ChatGPT responses to product and comparison queries.
Google Search Console measures 3 of 8 AI surfaces. Reddit is a top-3 citation source across 5 of them. Zero mainstream SEO tools publish to Reddit.

What Google's own mythbusting quietly confirms
Read the mythbusting section of Google's new AEO/GEO guide carefully and something interesting emerges.
Google says you do not need llms.txt. You do not need to chunk your content for AI systems. You do not need special schema. You do not need to rewrite pages in an "AI-friendly" way. Fine. Those are all things a certain generation of AEO consultants sold as urgency, and Google is correct that they mostly do not move the needle for its own AI features.
Then the guide addresses "mentions" — the tactic of getting your product or brand named across blogs, videos, and forums. Google acknowledges that AI features can and do surface these mentions. Its warning is against inauthentic ones — mentions manufactured for the sake of manufacturing them.
The word "inauthentic" is the tell. Google is not saying mentions do not matter. Google is saying only real ones do. And the largest concentration of real mentions on the internet — of products, tools, services, alternatives, comparisons, complaints, recommendations — is on Reddit.
Google's advice, read literally, is: do not fake conversations. It is not: avoid the platforms where real conversations happen. That is a distinction the SEO Twitter reactions to the guide flattened.
Three ways to read this wrong
The people most likely to misread these two Google moves fall into three groups.
In-house SEO teams will treat the new Search Console report as sufficient. It is not. It is the Google slice of a broader picture. Folding AI visibility into the existing SEO reporting cadence is the right call. Believing that cadence now covers the full AI-visibility surface is the mistake. The moment leadership asks how the brand is doing in ChatGPT and Claude, Search Console has nothing to say.
AEO and GEO consultants will read Google's "still SEO" ruling as a downgrade of their practice. The framing is actually a gift. Google just conceded that a real AI-visibility discipline exists, then defined its own visible portion narrowly. Everything outside that portion — cross-engine coverage, LLM-native citation sourcing, community-earned mentions — is the exact territory a specialist has to work in. The moat gets sharper, not shallower.
Brand and community teams should read Google's admission about forum mentions as an official green light. If Google says AI systems surface authentic conversation about products across blogs, videos, and forums, the strategic question stops being whether to invest in Reddit and becomes how to do it without getting removed. That is a workflow problem, not an existential one.
The publishing gap Google's dashboard won't fix
A visibility report is a rearview mirror. It tells you what already happened. It does not help you make the next thing happen.
Google Search Console has never been a publishing tool. It shows which pages ranked, which queries triggered impressions, which snippets earned clicks — and now, which AI answers surfaced you. It has never written a blog post, drafted a page, or submitted a form to a moderator queue on your behalf. That is not a failure of the product. It is the correct scope for the product.
The gap is that the industry is now standardizing on the rearview mirror as its entire AI-visibility stack, while the platform where most cross-engine citations originate — Reddit — has no publishing tool inside that stack at all. Not in Search Console. Not in HubSpot AEO. Not in Semrush's AI visibility features. Not in Ahrefs' AI Overviews report. Everyone is measuring. No one is publishing.
Where Reddit Assistant Pro fits
Reddit Assistant Pro is the publishing layer for the half of the AI-visibility surface Google's dashboard does not show you. It sits deliberately outside the measurement stack, because the measurement stack was never the problem.
Subreddit Discovery surfaces the communities where your product, service, or category is actually discussed — the raw material AI engines quote from.
Rule-aware post drafting checks your draft against the specific rules of each subreddit before you submit, so posts do not get removed inside the first ten minutes.
Karma-aware publishing flags account standing risks before you post, so the experiments a serious AEO team runs do not quietly fail because the accounts running them are shadow-banned.
LLM-citation formatting helps you write posts the way large language models retrieve and quote — specific, sourced, and structured for extractive reading.
Google gave you the dashboard for the Google slice. The other slice needs a workflow. That is what this product is for.
Closing
Google's new documentation is the most useful thing published for AI-visibility strategy this year. It settles the terminology debate. It scopes what the platform will measure. It flags the tactics not worth chasing. Taken seriously, it saves teams a lot of wasted time.
But the moves also invite the streetlight effect to run its full course. The industry is about to build its 2026 AI-visibility strategy inside the tool Google conveniently pointed the light at, while the rest of the room — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini standalone — continues to source most of its citations from the platform none of those tools help you publish to.
The half of the surface Google is not measuring is still the half producing most of the AI citations. Someone has to do the publishing work there. That is the space Reddit Assistant Pro exists to occupy.
Publish where Search Console won't look.
Reddit Assistant Pro is the Chrome extension that lets marketers, brand teams, and agencies post on Reddit without getting removed — and turn Reddit into the citation source ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity come back to.
